I was born in 1935 and brought up in a Nottinghamshire village where by tradition, it was expected to "follow suit" and become a coal miner. During my pit years, my thoughts were only of "escape". I found drawing and painting natural, and hoped it might be my way out. I clearly recall the total blackness underground and the blinding contrast of colours upon surfacing. I am quite sure these daily colour shocks influenced my work in later life. Unfortunately, in those days, because of responsibilities, art continued to be only a dream. After fourteen years of hard pit work followed by twenty-five years of exhausting business life, I paid the price a heart attack brought me to a halt. Cont...
